Japanese children leave their plastic toys and electronic gadgets at home to take part in a beetle festival. Here large beetles engage in wrestling and tug-of-war events much to the delight of onlookers. In Japan, summer is the season for insects. And one of the most favorite, especially among children, is the big, brown rhino beetle. Many children brought their pet beetles to enter them in wrestling matches, held in the city of Takasaki, located about 80 miles northwest of Tokyo on Sunday. They can measure more than two inches in size and the male beetle sports a sharp protruding horn, which looks like that of a rhino. The beetles struggled to push each other off a tree stump. [Hibiki Sudoh, Participant]: "They look very cool when they fight with their horns." [Yuuta Nakaizumi, Participant]: "I think my beetle is stronger than my robot toy." Apart from wrestling, some beetles took part in tug-of-war events. [Teppei Aizawa, Visitor]: "One beetle was dangling in the air with its horn still tied to the string after it lost a battle. It looked painful." Rhino beetles as well as the smaller stag beetles are popular insect pets for many Japanese elementary school students. Boys especially keep them in plastic cages. Some are found in the wild but they are also sold at pet stores across Japan as well as online with the price tags ranging from $6 up to $320.
