In a nutshell, back in 1776 the continental congress voted for independence and signed the historical document, The Declaration of Independence. This document created the legal separation of the thirteen American colonies from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Of course, before the document was signed there were a lot of events that led to the thirteen colonies wanting to sever their ties with the Kingdom. There were tax issues (unfairness), lack of representation in parliment, problems with local laws and a host of other issues. Because of these problems Americans started protesting which led to boycotts and then escalated to a group of Americans destroying a shipment of tea. That event is known as the Boston Tea Party. This caused the British government to shut down the port of Boston. Watch the video for more details.
