Subscribe to AOQ: https://youtube.com/c/allourquestions?sub_confirmation=1 Humans, on average, dream two hours per night during all phases of the sleep cycle but most of our dreams occur during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. During an 8 hour sleep cycle we enter REM sleep between 4 and 6 times and as the night goes on we spend more and more time of the 90 minute cycle in REM sleep and our most vivid dreams are most likely to occur during the final few hours of sleep. Although we don't know the exact science of why we dream just yet there are a number of theories that surround the topic. For example, Sigmund Freud proposed that our dreams are a representation of our unconscious desires. He thought the subconscious instincts that drive us are formed from our experiences as children and dreaming helps us become aware of them. J. Allan Hobson and Robert McClarley proposed back in the 1970's that when we go into REM sleep the circuits of the brain that deal with emotions and memory, also known as the limbic system, become active. Basically, the brain reacts to the signals firing in this part of the brain and tries to find meaning in them. Charles Darwin suggested that we evolved the ability to dream - implying that they have a positive effect on our mind and/or bodies.
