Karpathos is a unique island in the Aegean. The island was later successively occupied by Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Genovese, Venetians and Ottoman Turks. In 1913 it was ceded to Italians and liberated by initiative of the locals in October 1944, while in 1948 along with the other islands of the Dodecanese it was incorporated to Greece.
