World’s MOST DANGEROUS AIRPORT! (Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport, Saba Island.) This is the Caribbean island of Saba – and it is here that the world’s most dangerous airport is located. In fact the Airport is so dangerous that it’s been officially declared as closed – despite this, semi regular flights are undertaken, but they must first be granted special permission from the relevant Civil Aviation Authorities. Now there’s a couple of obvious factors that make this airport so hazardous... Firstly, the runway itself is the smallest commercial runway in the world. At 396 metres it’s not much longer than the flight deck of an air-craft carrier, yet of course, unlike an aircraft carrier, it doesn’t have any specialized stopping and launching mechanisms – so there’s very little margin for error, with treacherous cliffs that drop into the sea at both ends of the runway. And secondly, there’s the issue of having rocks, hills and mountains positioned so perilously close by… So yes, I reckon I’d take a helicopter or a boat if ever I wanted to visit this very beautiful and picturesque island… leave the airplane for Chuck Norris.
