American Ballet Theatre's video: Tapis Roulant

A short film created by Principal dancer, Cassandra Trenary and artist, technologist, and educator Kat Sullivan. "Tapis Roulant" is an examination of society’s views and various pressures on women, and the impact this has on how we, as women, view ourselves. Societal constructs both unspoken and at times painfully verbalized, dictate that women are for entrainement, to enhance the aesthetic of the space they occupy and to only express emotions that make those around them feel better about themselves. There is a constant reminder throughout pop culture and our daily lives that our worth, as women, as bodies, as minds, might be rooted in what is considered “comfortable” or “palatable” to men, certain institutions, and society at large. Cruelly, we also place such emphasis on youth and ‘newness’ - that we are something to be looked upon, gazed at, but only until something else comes along. In this work, Sullivan and Trenary investigate living with these ingrained expectations. Even if we dismiss these patriarchal and oppressive ways of thinking, can we truly escape them? What happens when the very words used to tear us down become the same we use to describe ourselves?
