ABANDONED 19TH CENTURY RAILROAD TUNNEL! This tunnel was built in 1882 by the East Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia Railroad which later became Southern Railway. A new section was built by cutting through the mountain in 1979 to bypass the tunnel, and the tunnel was abandoned in 1980. Almost ten feet of mud and silt have built up in one end.
