Battle of Marengo 1800 - Napoleonic Wars | History Animation. The battle of Marengo was fought between French army and Austrian forces near the city of Alessandria, in Piedmont, Italy in 1800. It was Napoleon's one of the first major victories in this career and a part of Napoleon's second Italian campaign against Austrian Empire. During the Napoleonic Era, The War of the 2nd coalition began in 1798. Napoleon was with constant war with Holy Roman Empire, Britain, Russia, Ottomans and others. Battle of Marengo in 1800 was a surprise counter attack by the Napoleon that ended the Austrian occupation in Italy. Napoleon defeated the Austrian forces commanded by Michael von Melas in the Marengo battle. Then Austria was sued for peace with France.
