Piles of twisted metal, grounded-down stumps, insulation, and trash dot the sides of the road as you approach Mexico Beach, and probably two-thirds of all business or homes received at least some form of structural damage from Panama City all the way to Port St. Joe, some 60 or 70 miles. Trees are twisted, mangled, and snapped like toothpicks and the skinnier trees which were lucky enough to survive remain bent over in the direction the wind was blowing during the storm. Numerous structures have "X's" taped or painted on the doors meaning that they are condemned and unsafe for entry due to water damage, black mold, structural damage, or Lord knows what? When approaching some of the ruined structures or what was left of them, you would be hit with the stench of mildew, rotting/wet wood, and the occasional whiff of raw sewage. These communities and the people of the southern Panhandle of Florida need help - more help than they originally got, and this needs to be back in our spitfire news cycle to alert the nation that there are thousands living in substandard conditions that have been forgotten.
