Ayutthaya or the old Kingdom of Siam is the old capital of Thailand and a UNESCO world heritage site due to the marvellous design of its infrastructure by its military at the time. Holding a tactical advantage over many of its foes for hundreds of years, most of it is left in ruins now. Ayutthaya is only 80km north of Bangkok so it's excellent for day trips, although I would recommend staying at least one night, preferably on the riverside. The city is very small so it's easy to get around, get yourself a bike of some sort and hop around to the many ancient temples that will surely leave you in awe. Let the munching begin... How to get Ayutthaya: My prefered mode of transport is taking the old school, very cheap train at the Bangkok Hua Lamphong Railway station that takes about 1.5 hours and costs ฿15($0.50).
