This is video footage of the British Army's (BAOR) 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards Battlegroup, part of the UK 1st Armoured Division on Exercise Iron Hammer, in West Germany near the village of Dassel between 1 - 27 November 1988 The Exercise took place across Lower Saxony in (then) West Germany. It involved the UK's 3rd Armored Division exercising for defence against an invasion by The Soviet Union/ Russian Tanks such as the T-64 and T-80 . The early arrival of the harsh German winter and its -20c temperatures/snow caused havoc with the exercising troops. It would be the last major British Army Field Training Exercise (FTX) of the Cold War, as the Berlin Wall fell a year later, and by 1991 the soviet union had dissolved and broken up.
