The common name "whitetip shark" may be in reference to multiple shark species. The two most prominent with this name are the whitetip reef shark and the oceanic whitetip shark. While they are classified in the same family and share the iconic markings denoted by their common names, these two shark species are quite different in their lifestyles. As their name suggests, oceanic whitetip sharks spend most of their lives in the open ocean, swimming in the top section of water about a deep abyss. Whitetip reef sharks on the other hand, live out their lives in reefs and are such homebodies that some have been recorded from the same area for years in a row!
