The amphiuma is the longest living salamander in the United States. This video focuses on amphiuma facts! Let us know what you learn in the comments! These slippery, snotty amphibians are nocturnal and only leave water when there is rain. This makes them quite rare to spot! Their main source of food is crayfish and they in turn act as the main source of food for mudsnakes. Amphiumas are also known as conger eels, Congo eels, and blue eels but they aren't eels - though they do have a distinct eel-like appearance.
Scientific Name: Genus - Amphiuma
Range: southeastern and central United States
Size: up to almost four feet (122cm) long - though some species don't reach half this!
Diet: crayfish along with clams, snails, worms, small fish, etc.
Lifespan: unknown in the wild; 20+ in captivity
