Ouran High School Host Club ( Ohran Koko Host Club , Ouran Koukou Hosutobu , Ouran Koukou Host Bu , OHSHC , 桜蘭高校ホスト部 , Ouran Gakuin ) is based on a manga of the same name by Bisco Hatori . It is a comedic anime series that revolves around the escapades of Haruhi Fujioka, a scholarship student at the prestigious Ouran Academy, a fictitious high school for rich kids. Looking for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon the abandoned Third Music Room, a place where the Ouran Academy Host Club , a group of six male students, gathers to entertain female "clients" with sweets and tea. During their initial encounter, Haruhi Fujioka accidentally destroys an antique vase and must work off the debt as the club's errand boy. Her short hair, slouching attire and gender-ambiguous face cause her to be mistaken by the Hosts for a male student, though they soon realize her actual gender and the fact that she's a "natural" in entertaining girls, promoting her to full-Host status. The other members of the Host Club are Haruhi Fujioka , Tamaki Suoh , Kyoya Ootori , Hikaru Hitachiin , Kaoru Hitachiin , Mitsukuni " Honey " Haninozuka , Takashi " Mori " Morinozuka . She also had encounters with other characters such as Renge Houshakuji , Umehito Nekozawa , and Ritsu Kasanoda while being a member of the host club . This anime belongs to the Comedy , Reverse - Harem , Romance , School , and Shoujo genre .
