Trekers start from gangotri early in the morning and trek 9 kms to take rest at chirbasa, a place surrounded by chir trees. One can easily stop by to behold the natural beauty of the place. A chir nersury is also under construction as a forestation project undertaken by the government of Uttarakhand. Tapovan is a very sacred place of Hinduism. Akash ganga a mountain stream flows through the valley of tapovan making it lush green during the monsoon. Mouni Baba, a sadhu who never speaks, stays here throughout the year in his stone built ashram. Trekkers often take refuge overnight in this ashram. Nila Tal, a glacial lake, is hardly 3 kms Trek from tapovan. This sacred place with diversified collection of flora and fauna is 20 kms from Gangotri, one of hindu char dhams and 4 kms from Gaumukh, the source of holy river Ganga .The river Ganga is also the lifeline of Northern India.
