We all hear people talking about antioxidants, that they’re good for you and that you need them. But do you actually know what they are or why they can reduce your risk of chronic diseases. I’ve mentioned the word antioxidants over and over again in my videos when talking about certain foods that are good for you. It’s certainly a must if you’re looking to improve your health and prevent disease. I’m going to tell you what they are, how they benefit you and where to get them. Antioxidants are compounds produced in your body and found in food. Antioxidants help prevent damage to your cells. They do this by inhibiting oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that can produce free radicals leading to chain reactions that may damage your cells. Antioxidants stops these chain reactions. The oxidative stress that antioxidants helps to prevent, increases your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. How does your body get antioxidants? Your body produces some of them internally, like glutathione. Another way to get them is through diet like vitamin c and vitamin e. Unfortunately, you get less antioxidants due to aging, medications, poor nutrition, stress and more. The most common antioxidants are Vitamin a, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, lycopene, selenium and the mother of all antioxidants Glutathione. The best way to increase antioxidants is through nutrition. Foods high in antioxidants are cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. Beef, fish, poultry and liver are another great way. Another vegetable, asparagus, is loaded with antioxidants like glutathione, vitamin e and vitamin c. Another food high in Glutathione is garlic. Garlic can help support your body's protective mechanisms against oxidative damage because of its antioxidants. Recent research shows that exercise helped maintain or increase antioxidant levels. Completing a combination of cardio and circuit weight training increased antioxidant levels the most. In addition to foods and exercise a 3rd way to increase antioxidants is with supplementation. The first supplement is N-Acetyl Cysteine. N-Acetyl Cysteine is an amino acid that is a precursor To Glutathione. Studies have shown that taking N-Acetyl Cysteine significantly increases Glutathione levels in the body. The next anti aging supplements are three B Vitamins, B6, B12 and B9 aka Folate.
