Your body can’t make its own omega 3 fatty acids so knowing the best foods to get them are crucial for your health and nutrition. Omega 3s are a group of essential fatty acids that provide your body with a number of health benefits. They are known to benefit your heart, brain, eyes and inflammation. There are 3 main types of omega 3s. DHA, EPA and ALA. Most of the health benefits are attributed to DHA and EPA but all three of them are important. Without eating fish DHA and EPA are hard to come by and like I said in the intro, your body doesn’t make it. That’s why most will recommend supplements for people who don’t eat fish. But there are foods you can eat where you can get all of the omega 3s whether you eat meat or not. Some of you may have heard that ala converts to epa and dha which is true but it only converts a tiny amount which is not enough to gain much benefit from. The first group of foods are high in ALA starting with chia seeds. They come from the flowering plant salvia Hispanica. These tiny black seeds pound for pound are one of the best nutrient packed foods. Besides the omega 3 they contain high quality protein, fiber, magnesium and phosphorus. The next food is flaxseed. Flax is one of the oldest fiber crops in the world. It’s available as seeds, oil, flour or powder. Flaxseeds also contain fiber, protein and magnesium. Another food high in ALA are walnuts. This great source of healthy fats can be enjoyed on their own, in salads, yogurt, trail mix and granola. Hempseeds are the seeds of the hemp plant, cannabis sativa. From the same species as cannabis or marijuana but a different variety so don’t get too high on them ;) but Hempseeds are high in omega 3s and have protein and various minerals. The next food to get ala is soybean oil. Many people use soybean oil for cooking and can be used in salad dressings. They are also rich in riboflavin, magnesium, potassium, folate and vitamin K.
