After months of fighting winter in parkas and polo necks spring is here in T minus 5 days which means longer, brighter days and a perkier wardrobe. Last Wednesday I got dressed into another black and grey outfit and then undressed immediately; it was time for some colour via my orange suit from Joseph. My love of tailoring has been ongoing since I willingly wore my school blazer at weekends. This season the super brands have given tailoring their attention too with metallic green at Gucci and the palest pink at Stella McCartney. A sharp suit doesn’t come cheap so how do you make sure you get your style’s worth? I put my well-loved Joseph suit to the test and have worn it in a different way every day since. A sharp suit makes me feel sexy and powerful but that doesn’t mean it should be restricted to work or eveningwear. To make the suit more relaxed I paired it with a grey marl tee and Stan Smith’s; immediately a more exciting alternative to jeans and a blazer. Bright colours and neutral tones are close friends so your white shirt, navy s vest and charcoal knit will all work beautifully here. The length and finish of a suit can ruin a smart outfit so pay attention to your hemlines; in general you want the length to be just above your wrist bone with arms outstretched and your trousers to sit atop of your trainers/ sandals/ block heels. Now onto the statement jacket, a piece that I continue to buy from season to season: bright, textured, brocade and sequin – I’m addicted. A bright jacket is a brilliant trans-seasonal piece whilst spring weather is unpredictable. For a full on clash layer it over bright or metallic knitwear or if this is too loud team it with a neutral outfit and bright accessories. For weekend styling I styled the longline Joseph jacket over an orange knit and under a sleeveless wool blazer which meant I was still able to flash the colour of the sleeves.
