We first tune to DADGAD, but if this video goes through that to fast for you, Fenders website has a nice online tuner that where you can select DADGAD from the dropdown menu - https://www.fender.com/online-guitar-tuner/acoustic-guitar-tuning After tuning down we run through the scale of D Major on all three of the D strings in DADGAD to get our fingers used to the positions. Then I introduce the low movable octave shape, then the high movable octave shape before combining then with some rhythm. It's a fun trick that I find really helps to get to grips with the DADGAD fretboard fast.
