In the earlier drafts of Episode IV, Princess Leia is not held hostage on the Death Star but on an Imperial city named Alderaan, which was a floating city in the clouds inspired by an episode of Flash Gordon. However, to simplify the plot, the Death Star was made into the all-purpose threat, so the prison rescue was moved from Alderaan to the planet-destroying battlestation. When it came time to write The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas re-used the abandoned idea from A New Hope, which Ralph McQuarrie had already done paintings of in 1975.
