On the 6th day of the Spiti Valley bike trip, we set out from Tabo towards Kaza. However, before reaching Kaza, we took a detour towards Dhankar, which is 31 km away from Tabo. After ascending around 8 km of steep slopes, we reached the Dhankar village, situated at an altitude of 12,774 feet. The Dhankar Monastery, located atop a peak that rises 1000 ft (300 meters) high in Dhankar, overlooks the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers. It is one of the world's most spectacular settings for a monastery. The term "dhang" means cliffs, and "kar" refers to a fortress or a fort. Therefore, "Dhangkar" signifies a fortress on a cliff. Descending nearly 8 km in a short span, we returned to the highway and made our way towards the Spiti riverbank, occasionally riding off-road. The shallow and sparkling blue water of the river was quite captivating. After spending some time there, we resumed our ride and soon arrived in Kaza.
