In the movie, even after getting stabbed by his own piece through his stomach he did not want Dr. Strange to give up the Time Stone. In this case, after being put down by Thanos Iron Man stands down from the fight, lets Thanos get away so he can change back to normal. The heroes on Wakanda will hopefully take care of Thanos. The Skrull thought he was safe. However, the reason Thanos left so fast is so he could avoid Captain Marvel. Whom spotted Iron Man revealing themselves as a Skrull.
