For centuries, the incredibly charismatic, highly social and extremely intelligent wolf, has held a special place in our consciousness. With their bigger brains, stronger muscles, and teeth and jaws many times more powerful than any dog, wolves have long been cherished and feared. It’s both understandable and surprising that people want to take a bit of that wildness home in the shape of a wolf/dog mix — or “wolfdog” — which some consider to represent the best of both worlds: a dog’s friendly companionship paired with a wolf’s good looks and untamed nature. Wolves and wolf-dogs pose significant behavioral challenges for owners, many of whom are unable or unwilling to meet them, thus creating a large population of unwanted animals who wind up chained in backyards, abandoned or euthanized. Wolf Connection is unique sanctuary just outside of Los Angeles that not only rescues wolves and wolf dogs, but also helps to rehabilitates them after they have suffered severe abuse and neglect. In turn, the wolves become a vital tool in "wolf therapy". Helping at- risk groups over come emotional issues and learn the skills to trust again and care for another being. I was lucky enough to meet the Wolf Connection wolf pack and spend the day with these magnificent creatures. You learn a lot about yourself through your time with these animals. Just mark the difference in your consciousness from when you drove in, to when you drove out. The CHALLENGE ASHA series is all about conquering your fears and stepping out of your comfort zone. But remember, you don't have to be perfect first time! It's just an attempt, just the first step. Continually pushing yourself to reach your dreams, no matter how small the goal will only lead you on the path of living a richer, fuller life.
