Aspiring Caveman's video: Rock Explodes Dangers of Rock Boiling

Rock boiling is an ancient method of cooking and water purification. (Gotta give the "Primitive Technology" guy a shout-out. It was his videos that inspired me do mine similar to his.) However, it is not without its perils. Care must be taken when heating up the rocks and, apparently, when dropping them into your vessel. The reason why river rocks explode when heated is that over the eons tiny amount of moisture make it inside the them with the seasonal changes in temperature as they expand and contract. When the rocks get hot enough, the small amounts of water inside them become super-heated. The explosion normally takes place while the rock is being heated up. To prevent injury, the fire structure is built in such a way that it contains the energy. In this case, however, the rock only lost its integrity when it was suddenly cooled down by the water it was placed in. Lesson: do not lean over the vessel you are rock boiling in! What cracked me up when I watched this video for the first time was how I went back to work seemingly without missing a beat. When you live out in the woods, you develop a thick skin toward adversity. It's not unlike the mouse going back for the bait even though the trap just missed it by "this much". She must be thinking: "This thing failed to kill me, I've come this far, might as well get what I came here for." While this experience was crazy dangerous, there is power in rolling with the punches, so-to-speak.
