She explored what it means to be a Humanist in a New Jim Crow era of deep racial, gender and economic inequality. She is the founder of Black Skeptics Los Angeles and the Women’s Leadership Project, a mentoring and civic engagement program for South L.A. girls of color. Her books include Imagining Transit: Race, Gender, and Transportation Politics in Los Angeles, Moral Combat: Black Atheists, Gender Politics, and the Values Wars, and White Nights, Black Paradise, a novel on Black women, Peoples Temple, and the Jonestown massacre that she has adapted into a short film and play. She is also the writer and producer of the play and webseries Narcolepsy, Inc. Her second novel, Rock 'n' Roll Heretic: The Life and Times of Rory Tharpe, is due Fall 2020.
