He finished high school in Sparta and studied Philosophy and Literature at the University of Athens. After graduating in 1966, he started his teaching career. Subsequently, he moved to Munich in 1970, in order to teach at the School of Otto Gesellschaft and study German Literature. In 1975, he was appointed teaching assistant to the Laboratory of Education in Athens and begun work on his PhD. In 1978, he completed his PhD with honors and was appointed professor to the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens. He went on to achieve the highest academic ranks. As a professor, he gave many training seminars and lectures to senior teachers and wrote several books on philosophy and education. His seminal work, "Gemma", has been translated into several languages. In June 1st 1998, Professor Liantinis disappeared, leaving a letter to his daughter, Diotima, in which he stated his decision to vanish by his own free will, after a lifelong and step by step preparation. As it was natural, his unexpected disappearance evoked public interest and led to many controversial speculations. After seven years (July 2005), Panagiotis Nikolakakos, cousin of Professor Liantinis, revealed to Diotima the crypt in Mount Taygetus where her father lay, as he had been instructed to do by Professor Liantinis himself, prior to his departure. After several thorough forensic tests and analyses, the skeleton found in the crypt has been positively identified as belonging to Professor Liantinis. The date of death has been estimated in-between 1st and 5th of June, 1998. The cause of death remains undetermined since no lethal substances were detected.
