Krishna explains the meaning of renunciation and the effects of the modes of nature on human consciousness and activity. He explains realization of Brahman, the glories, and the ultimate conclusion of the Bhagawad Geetha. The highest path of religion is absolute, unconditional and loving surrender unto Lord Krishna. This frees one from all sins, brings one to complete enlightenment, and enables one to return to Krishna's eternal spiritual abode. This is sanyasa or liberation. The Fundamental teachings of the Gita involve karma, sanyasa and moksha. The path of karma, or karma yoga, is being in the world, accomplishing what needs to be accomplished, keeping with dharma, performed with bhakti (devotion), not seeking results, but for liberation, moksha. Sanyasa is living a life outside of the normal worldly demands, solely in pursuit of knowledge to attain moksha. As Krishna repeats many times, both are valid pursuits to gain liberation, enlightenment, freedom from suffering, or knowledge of the True Self. Another way of describing the teaching is two-fold; brahma-vidya and yoga-shastra. Brahma-vidya is direct knowledge of the Self: Aatman is Brahman. Yoga-shastra refers to the preparatory practices and actions that prepare the seeker for Brahma-vidya. Krishna’s teaching ends with a restatement of the first teaching verse. “Giving up all karmas, take refuge in Me alone. I will release you from all karma; do not grieve” Finally, Arjuna says, “By your grace, my delusion and doubts have gone and I have gained recognition of myself, I am ready to do what you say.” Arjuna has been convinced of the need for action and he is ready for it. Overall summary of the 18 Chapters The Bhagavad Gita articulates the fundamental truth of Vedanta. That means the formless and the world of form, God and creation, awareness and what arises in awareness, everything and nothing. The Vedantic teaching is summarized in the famous mahavakya “tat tvam asi”, YOU ARE THAT. Infinite, unbounded spaciousness and all of creation moment by moment, is you! A simple equation and quite a radical statement. This knowledge unfolds in 18 chapters of Bhagavad Geetha. The first six are about ‘tvam’, you, the student, the seeker of knowledge, with Arjuna serving as the student. The second six are about ‘tat‘, the infinite splendour of the divinity and creation in its fullness. The final six chapters are the equal sign, asi. The seeker is the sought. That Arjuna is no different from Krishna. Krishna knows this from the beginning, Arjuna understands this at the end. In everyone’s life also, 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita play out.
