Krishna understands Arjuna’s pain and suffering but pulls him up for whimpering like a child. Arjuna, taken aback, explains his dilemma more clearly. Finally, Arjuna, as his disciple, submits to Lord Krishna and asks Krishna for help with this seemingly unresolvable inner conflict. Krishna begins his teachings and the Geetha officially starts. This Chapter is very important as it contains the essence of the whole teaching. Krishna explains the distinction between the temporary material body and the immutability of the Atma, the eternal spiritual soul, which is beyond life and death. The Lord explains the process of transmigration, the nature of selfless service to the Supreme, and the characteristics of a self-realized person. Krishna describes wisdom and the wise one who knows the ‘Truth’ of wholeness. All the knowledge that is needed for enlightenment is presented. Understanding the nature of desire is the key. Arjuna is advised to remain steadfast in yoga, perform actions, abandon attachment, and to treat success and failure alike. This evenness of mind is called yoga. This chapter in a normal person’s life represents being woken up by someone who says, “There’s nothing to regret in life. There is something in you that doesn’t change and you have the power to sail over all these.” This wakes one up and makes one ready for action with confidence. Overall summary of the 18 Chapters The Bhagavad Gita articulates the fundamental truth of Vedanta. That means the formless and the world of form, God and creation, awareness and what arises in awareness, everything and nothing. The Vedantic teaching is summarized in the famous mahavakya “tat tvam asi”, YOU ARE THAT. Infinite, unbounded spaciousness and all of creation moment by moment, is you! A simple equation and quite a radical statement. This knowledge unfolds in 18 chapters of Bhagavad Geetha. The first six are about ‘tvam’, you, the student, the seeker of knowledge, with Arjuna serving as the student. The second six are about ‘tat‘, the infinite splendour of the divinity and creation in its fullness. The final six chapters are the equal sign, asi. The seeker is the sought. That Arjuna is no different from Krishna. Krishna knows this from the beginning, Arjuna understands this at the end. In everyone’s life also, 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita play out.
