Yet, Krishna asks him to act and take up battle. In India, there is a strong tradition of Sanyasa, a life of renunciation by giving up worldly possessions and responsibilities, in pursuit of knowledge. Sometimes this stage comes after raising a family but it could also come at any time in one’s life. Arjuna tells Krishna that he wants to be a sanyasi to gain knowledge and that he definitely does not want to fight. Krishna explains the nature of action or karma, and describes ‘Karma Yoga’. Everyone must engage in some activity in this material world. Actions can either bind one to this world or liberate one from it. By acting for the pleasure of the Supreme, without selfish motives, one can be liberated from the law of karma (action and reaction) and attain transcendental knowledge of the self and the Supreme. The teaching returns to the nature of desire, likes, and dislikes. These are not to be eliminated as that becomes yet another desire. One has to see them for what they are and ensure one is not held hostage by them. Even for a moment, no one ever exists without performing action. Everyone is prompted to act by the Gunas (Traits) -Thamas, Rajas and Sattva - born of Prakriti or Nature. This chapter asks one to act. Life is not for sitting and worrying especially about oneself. It propels one to action; Karma Yoga. Overall summary of the 18 Chapters The Bhagavad Gita articulates the fundamental truth of Vedanta. That means the formless and the world of form, God and creation, awareness and what arises in awareness, everything and nothing. The Vedantic teaching is summarized in the famous mahavakya “tat tvam asi”, YOU ARE THAT. Infinite, unbounded spaciousness and all of creation moment by moment, is you! A simple equation and quite a radical statement. This knowledge unfolds in 18 chapters of Bhagavad Geetha. The first six are about ‘tvam’, you, the student, the seeker of knowledge, with Arjuna serving as the student. The second six are about ‘tat‘, the infinite splendour of the divinity and creation in its fullness. The final six chapters are the equal sign, asi. The seeker is the sought. That Arjuna is no different from Krishna. Krishna knows this from the beginning, Arjuna understands this at the end. In everyone’s life also, 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita play out.
