AusztralTom's video: Ausztr l Tom 2020 - The Joy of Learning Hungarian

@Ausztrál Tom 2020 - The Joy of Learning Hungarian
As seen on RTL, Petofi M2 and in line at Fornetti. (Bocsi a magyar hibakat!) In today’s episode of Keeping up with the Hungarians we explore the Hungarian language learning experience. For Hungarians, here’s an outsider perspective on the language learning journey. I’m curious if you also though of it this way. And for English speakers, this is my letter of support/pep talk. You may be surprised to know there are plenty of Hungarian language learners out there. With a lot of inputs from amazing Hungarians on Twitter, Instagram, via email and in the comments, I wanted to put together this love letter to the Hungarian language. I know I go through waves where I feel like I’m getting the hang of it, then feel completely incompetent. Obviously this applies to all foreign language learning, but sometimes Hungarian feels a bit spesh. I’ve never done a two-language video before with a special focus on English, so hope it’s okay. This 4 minute video took me around 18 hours to subtitle haha, so please be gentle about any clumsiness. This video is a bit conceptual at times, but each ‘segment’ has a very real backstory. As always, please like, comment and subscribe/feliratkozz for your regular dose of Hungarian substance through an Australian filter. And come join the conversation in the comments, or - Instagram: www.instagram.com/ausztraltom - Twitter www.twitter.com/ausztraltom - Via Email: ausztraltom@gmail.com In recent news, I had the extraordinary privilege of taking part in the LIVE national TV interview in Hungarian the other day for M2 Petofi. It was with Hungarian popstar Lola, and I can share that she and the whole M2 Petofi crew were total legends. If helpful in the slightest, I’ve included the full transcript of this video here: (https://ausztraltom.blogspot.com/2020/07/ausztral-tom-joy-of-learning-hungarian.html). Many teachers have written to me over the years sharing that they use my videos in their classrooms. What an honour! I don’t know if this transcript is handy, but maybe it’ll save someone some time. Also here is a blog breaking down some of the references in the video (https://ausztraltom.blogspot.com/2020/07/ausztral-tom-joy-of-learning-hungarian_17.html) There are so many wonderful Hungarian language resources out there - more than I could number in this description. If you have a resource you run or love, please let me know. I could share plenty of books, courses or schools, but for now below are a few resources that people overlook, which I’ve gotten huge value from. - https://www.reddit.com/r/hungarian/ - This reddit community is populated by intelligent, helpful, insightful people (native Hungarian and language learners) who have been so generous in answering my questions in the past. - Follow @magyarul on Instagram - Great to browse instagram and come across some educational bite-sized Hungarian. I also like their saved stories where they have, for example, excerpts from Friends with very clear translations. It’s so easy to pause and digest the knowledge at your own pace. - Bab.la dictionary - https://en.bab.la/dictionary/english-hungarian/ Whatever you search for, they provide a good number of diverse sample sentences. So helpful to see a word in context. - SZTAKI dictionary - Somewhat legendary resource. I find them to be really strong in providing common/natural turns of phrase. http://szotar.sztaki.hu/english-hungarian - Cooljugator - https://cooljugator.com/hu Very helpful conjugator. The hover-over tips and contextual sentences make it all make sense. Thanks for watching and see you soon!
