@2021 Toyota GR Supra A91 Edition | Review By Kevin "Crash" Corrigan | Automotive Affairs
2021 Toyota GR Supra A91 Edition - Is It Worthy Of Stardom? The Supra name first appeared in 1978 on a top trim of the Toyota Celica (A40/A50), and this naming scheme continued when the A60 model of Celica was launched for the 1982 model year. However, in 1986 - Toyota turned the Supra from a model trim into its own vehicle, when the A70 was introduced. This car was much larger than previous models (clearly targeted for the American market), while its body shell played host to 7 different engines - based on where you lived. It was a wonderful car, but its replacement would make the public forget all about it! For the 1994 model, Toyota brought out the 4th generation model of the Supra (A80), and this was a sensation! You got active aerodynamics, a sophisticated chassis, a luxurious interior, and a twin-turbo inline-six cylinder motor (A non-turbo motor was also offered, but no one cares about those). The A80 was also the first Japanese production car to feature a six-speed manual gearbox - so it was really ahead of its time! However, it was also very expensive - which meant, hardly anyone in North America bought one, when new! So, Toyota pulled the Supra out of the North American market by the end of 1998 - although it was sold in Japan up until 2002. In 2001, the A80 Supra got the biggest plug any car could hope for - as it was chosen to be the star car in the original "The Fast & The Furious" movie - and was used by the movies main character - Brian O'Conner - played by Paul Walker (R.I.P.). This gave the Supra nameplate a big boost, and suddenly everyone wanted one - just when the model was no longer in the showrooms! Toyota themselves were confused, wondering if this is just a passing fad, or there really is something to it! Well, they certainly took their time deciding on the return, but at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, USA - the A90 Supra (its actually the J29 due to its BMW connection) was revealed! The introduction was hosted by the President of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, and Formula-One star Fernando Alonso. Finally out in the open, the car got mixed reviews! Many cried it was not like the FT1 concept in size and proportions, and many asked why it wasn't made on the Lexus LC500 platform; rather than on the BMW Z4. As always, you have to try the car to really see what it's like - so here's what we found! Styling: This is a handsome looking car, and it turns heads everywhere it goes! The double-bubble roof makes it look like something from Zagato. If you're shy, don't buy the GR ( Gazoo Racing ) Supra. Score: 8/10 Interior: Step inside, and you'll find that the quality of the fit and finish is very good - although it is a bit snug in here. Also, the interior will also be very familiar to anyone who has been in a BMW in the last decade - a Supra should have been more unique! Hence, the score is: 6/10 Safety: Toyota and BMW both make very safe cars, and having seen pictures and reports of the GR Supra after someone crashed one, it is fair to say this car is very safe! Score: 8/10 Powertrain: Under the hood lies a twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0L I6 motor that is good for 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. Power is fed to just the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Score: 7/10 Performance: This car is quick, very quick! The 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) run is over in just 3.7 seconds - that makes it supercar quick! However, it's top speed is limited to 255 km/h - which means, it is not supercar fast! Score: 7/10 Driving Dynamics: The GR Supra A91 Edition is a lot of fun to drive. It is tight, nimble, and responsive - so it you want to have fun, this is brilliant! But, if you're looking for a long-distance cruiser, there are better choices! This car is not the most comfortable to cover lots of miles in - hence the score is: 7/10 Fuel Economy: In our fuel consumption test (180 km of highway driving + 120 km of city driving) - the Supra A91 achieved 10.7 L/100 km - which is very decent for a sports car. Score: 7/10 Pricing: The 2021 Toyota GR Supra starts from $56,000 (base four-cylinder), up to $71,000 for this A91 Edition (prices in Canadian funds). At this price, it locks horns with the new C8 Corvette - so Toyota should have priced it lower to gain more market share! Score: 6/10 Verdict: The new GR Supra is not perfect, but it is still a seriously desirable car - we just wish it was a junior Lexus LFA and not a re-badged BMW. Total score: 56/80 Hope you enjoyed the video, please SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel, and also find us on Facebook and Instagram. We hope to bring you a test of the new Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ in the near future!
