Mazda 3 GT AWD vs. Nissan Altima SR AWD - Which one is best? By Nauman Farooq Time for a bit of a comparo! Here we have two sedans, both just under $40,000. One is a compact, the other is a mid-size. Both have four cylinder engines, and both have all-wheel drive systems. But, which one is better? Let's find out! Styling: Both look good, but in my opinion, the Nissan is slightly more attractive than the Mazda - hence score: Mazda3 - 8/12.5 Sentra SR - 9/12.5 Interior: The Mazda3 has a higher quality interior, whereas the Sentra SR has more room. Both have infotainment systems that are far from perfect, while both offer impressive levels of comfort. Score: Mazda3 - 9/12.5 Sentra SR - 9/12.5 Safety: This is an easier one! The 2024 Mazda3 is rated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) as a Safety Pick +; whereas the Nissan Sentra SR doesn't (it used to in 2022, but the tests are harder now, and the Nissan just didn't get the scores needed for the Safety + rating). Score: Mazda3 - 11/12.5 | Sentra SR - 9/12.5 Powertrain: Both vehicles have four-cylinder engines, and are similar is power - 191 hp for the Mazda; 182 for the Nissan. Hence, both get a score of 6/12.5. Worth noting, the Mazda3 is available with a turbocharged motor, that greatly enhances performance; while the Sentra used to be available with a strong V6 engine, but sadly isn't anymore. Performance: Given these aren't very powerful motor cars, you probably aren't expecting them to be rocket ships - and you'd be right! The Nissan Altima SR AWD did the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 8.94 seconds; while the Mazda3 GT AWD took 8.60 seconds. While the win goes to the Mazda, the numbers are too close - hence both get a equal score of 5/12.5 Driving Dynamics: Neither of these cars will get you out of bed early in the morning, just to go for a blast, but I will say, the Mazda rides and handles better than the Nissan. You feel a connection with the 3 GT AWD; the far less rigid chassis of the Sentra SR surely worked against it. Score: Mazda - 8/12.5 | Nissan - 5/12.5 Fuel Economy: I'm just going to look at the highway number here, and going off the figures on the respective car makers own website. The Mazda3 GT AWD will do 6.3L/100 km; the Nissan Sentra SR AWD would drink 6.7L/100 km. While the Mazda scores a win, by a fairly small margin, I think the difference isn't big enough to give each car a different score - so 8/12.5 for both. Pricing: The Mazda3 GT AWD is yours from $36,995. The larger, and roomier Nissan Altima SR AWD is yours from $39,485. Score for both - 6/12.5 Verdict: If you have a family, and yet still are keeping away from crossovers and SUVs - first of all, bravo - then both of these sedans could be of interest to you. If your kids are little, or you're in the car mostly by yourself, the Mazda3 GT AWD would do you fine; it is the nicer of the two to drive. However, if you have teenagers, then the extra rear legroom of the Nissan Altima SR AWD would get your attention. If you're a keen driver, you'd probably end up hating the Nissan - it is a car for people who don't really care for cars!
