For his new work, artist Lans King has surgically implanted an NFC microchip into his body. The chip is the key element of his conceptual artwork entitled “This is my body (of work) 2019-”. It contains a private cryptographic blockchain code which represents the work itself. It is perhaps the first artwork ever to be fully integrated within the body of an artist. The microchip or “biochip” is encased in a glass capsule; it also contains the algorithm which he uses to produce his painting and sculpture. This work is part of his ongoing art practice which examines our lives between real and virtual, analog and digital, material and conceptual. His paintings combine algorithms, code and digital printing with manual painting techniques. Some of the paintings are also hybrid with video screens and framed as a single unit. Code has always been a part of Lans King’s work as a way of making us aware of the extent to which our society is driven by numbers and data. Based on the codes in the capsule, Lans King has produced a limited edition series of purely digital “capsule’ art works. The works have been made available for sale on the Blockchain Art Exchange. Lans King is a British-American contemporary artist. His work is centred around his theme called “The Hyperreality Show. Hyperreality is defined growing inability to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality, especially as it relates to media and technology. This work is realised as painting, sculpture, video and now digital art. He lives and works between London, Paris, and New York. Lans King and his work has been recently recently featured in a BBC documentary. He will be the subject of “The Hyperreality Show”. The show is itself an art project which documents his life, his work and his adventures in the global art world.
