Once again, the combination of set design, costumes, narrative and soundtrack creates an emotionally captivating symbiosis. While the Dresden pop band Woods Of Birnam, along with the Bryan Ferry Orchestra and an original recording by cabaret artist Claire Waldoff, constitute the bulk of the soundtrack, the finely orchestrated pieces stem from the collective pen of Klimek/Tykwer. Their mixture of exotic music, jazz, program music and larger-than-life-sound creates an overwhelming, immersive sensualism of the Berlin of the time. The opium caves, the outskirts of the dancehall Moka Efti where those secret connections between prostitution, drug dealers, the art scene, politics, gangsters and industrialists come together – “Bis in den Mondenschein” (“Until moonlight”), as Meret Becker sings in the eponymous song with a trembling voice.
