Josh Crespo, April 9, 2016 One-on-One with Orlandito Del Valle: “I’m Fighting For My Family!” by Rob Quijano I made arrangements to meet up and interview Luis Orlandito Del Valle in Bayamon. I arrived before Orlandito at the Monterey Boxing Club. A humble but respected gym that is run by former fighter himself, Emilio Lozada. Lozada in addition to training Orlandito for some time now, also trains other professionals/amateurs, and makes custom mouthpieces for fighters all over the Island. I spoke with Lozada for a bit before Orlandito arrived and watched as he worked with professional fighter Bryan Chevalier (fighting on 4/23/16 in Caguas). Orlandito arrived, wrapped his hands, and we spoke outside regarding his upcoming fight in New Hampshire on April 9th. I asked Orlandito (20-2-0 with 15 KOs) what he could tell me about his opponent. Orlandito explained that he is fighting Josh Crespo in his hometown and was not taking him lightly. I mentioned that Crespo’s record of 6-2-3 was a little deceiving since he is coming off 5 straight victories (last 2 over undefeated fighters) and is the New England Super Bantamweight Champion. Orlandito advised that this bout would not be for that title. Orlandito continued, “We fought back in November, wanting to stay busy and RocNation got me this fight. We’ll take care of business if we want to keep moving up the ladder.” I brought up to Orlandito that he has fought several times on Showtime and twice on HBO (against Vic Darchinyan and a questionable loss against Luis Rosa). I told Orlandito that I understood there would be another TV bout after this one and he replied, “Yes. RocNation, I’m very happy with them. RocNation has another date. We’re not thinking about the next fight. We’re thinking about Josh Crespo. We need to handle our business with him if we want to be on the next fight on TV…but Yes, RocNation has a TV fight (possibly in May).” Very recently here in Puerto Rico rival promoters have been going back and forth about their fighters facing each other. The public opinion has been divided. I told Orlandito that here in Puerto Rico everyone loves to support our fighters but there is so much talent here at 126lbs., as well as in the States with Abner Mares (Orlandito had mentioned Mares in the past as a possible opponent) and Leo Santa Cruz. I asked Orlandito who he would like to face and would he be willing to face someone from here. Orlandito responded, “Boxing is a business and if it makes sense, why not? I’m not a fan of Puerto Ricans fighting Puerto Ricans but I believe I’m the best 122-126 pounder in all of Puerto Rico. I have much love for all my fellow Puerto Ricans but if there is an opportunity approach and it makes sense.
