I was horrified to discover that I had been ruined, and for some days I was inconsolable, and cried like a child to be killed or sent back to my aunt." -London Labour and the London Poor Book -------------------------------------------- Poem Introduction: Deceptions’ by Philip Larkin tells of the aftermath of a young woman’s rape and the way both rapist and victim were changed. The poem begins with Larkin utilizing a passage from Henry Mayhew’s work, London Labour and the London Poor. The selection comes from a young woman who was raped. She tells of her distress after the attack was over.
