What started out as a seasonal porch chair ended up being a staple of the American living room. Cousins Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker designed a wood slat outdoor folding chair from orange crates in 1928 - the first La-Z-Boy recliner. A comfortable concept, the chair followed the contour of a person’s body, both sitting up and leaning back. In 1927, the cousins abandoned secure jobs, joined forces, and invested in their own furniture business in Monroe, Michigan. Suddenly, Knabusch, a woodworker, became the marketer, and Shoemaker, originally a farmer, became an engineer. An important furniture buyer refused to purchase any La-Z-Boys from the cousins because at that time La-Z-Boys while very comfortable were only seasonal porch chairs. The buyer advised the inventors to upholster the chair and sell it as a year-round piece. The upholstered recliner was a great success. With financial help from friends and family, Knabusch and Shoemaker patented their invention and registered their trademarks. In 1931, Knabusch and Shoemaker received a patent for the first automatic recliner. La-Z-Boy rode their solid reputation and emerged as the Baby Boom favorite into the 1950s. During 1970s and 1980s La-Z-Boy hired several big name celebrities for their ad campaign such as actor Jim Backus (Thurston Howell III on Gilligan’s Island) and actor and former Detroit Lions Alex Karras. Today La-Z-Boy is truly a 21st Century forward thinking furniture and home decor company with retail design showrooms across the United States and around the world. .---------------------------------------------------------------- If you see this, type "ONLY THE BEST BRANDS!" in the comments - and please LIKE/FAV! ---------------------------------------------------------------- BrandmadeTV - How a La-Z-Boy Recliner is made! © BrandmadeTV 2015 This format and title of this program is protected under Copyright and Trademark Law and may not be emulated or re-created in any way without express consent in any territory worldwide.
