The KING tells RICHELIEU that he has had second thoughts and that his men should provide the escort for the COUNT. At first RICHELIEU is overjoyed by the news, as he considers it to be a personal victory over the MUSKEHOUNDS, but then he feels uneasy. Why has the KING changed his mind? Proudly, the CARDINAL’s guards head for the border in full dress uniform to wait for the COUNT OF BAVARIA. But they are ambushed en route by BLANCBEC’s men and taken prisoner. A mysterious masked man tells them with a laugh not to worry, that his men will meet the COUNT OF BAVARIA as arranged. It is BLANCBEC, who is planning to present himself again as the KING, so that he can insult the COUNT OF BAVARIA and spoil the projected alliance.
