Unsound Sound's video: The Cars You re All I ve Got Tonight guitar cover

This song rocks. I love how The Cars transfer who has the lead around from bar to bar, section to section -- now the singer, now the keyboard, now the guitar, now the bass...This song is a little different though because it really features the singer and the lead guitar more than anyone else -- maybe because it is sort of a "love duet", like the lead guitar is the other that the singer is talking to in the song. It's kind of strange though, for a love song, because I can't tell if "you're all i've got tonight" means a sort of a new wave riff on "love the one your with," but with a more somber "i will settle for it" kind of tone; or does it mean that i have nothing else and you mean so much to me. I suppose that is for every listener to decide. Every time I play The Cars I think, "I need a humbucker" because that what Elliot Easton has on stage. But when I try, I always wind up cycling through a couple guitars until I come back to this particular Stratocaster -- an early 1990s American Standard with red lace sensors. For whatever reason, it sounds the most like the lead guitar on the recording to me. I played it through a new amp: a Marshall DSL40C (set on 20W) with some gain. I use an MXR Flanger in the beginning, then soon click on a TC Electronic delay (on Lo-Fi) for a little bit of 50's like slapback for the rest of the song. I click on an Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer overdrive for the second fill lick in every verse, and during the solos. After the second solo, I leave it on so I make a lot of noise at the song's climax in the last chorus.
