Ecotasia's video: Meet the AMAZING AKIAP L AU

This might be one of the strangest beaks in the bird world. A long thin and curved upper beak and a short sturdy lower beak. This is the Akiapolaau, an endangered species from the big island of hawaii, that uses this beak like a swiss-army knife, to dig into the bark trees and fish out the tasty grubs underneath. This little yellow finch is essentially the woodpecker of hawaii, as woodpeckers rarely reach remote islands, and so islands are home to weird animals filling in for woodpeckers such as the aye-aye of madagascar. Unfortunately due to habitat loss and in the case of the Akipolaau, the introduction of avian malaria, they are at risk of extinction and keeping insect pests from damaging the trees of the forest.
