Operation Mincemeat was a World War II deception strategy employed by the British intelligence agency MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS or MI6) in 1943. The goal of the operation was to deceive Nazi Germany about the Allied invasion of Southern Europe. The British obtained the corpse of a deceased homeless man, Glyndwr Michael, and created a fictional identity for him as Captain (Acting Major) William Martin of the Royal Marines. They dressed him in a military uniform and attached a briefcase containing fake documents to his wrist, suggesting an impending Allied invasion of Sardinia and Greece instead of the actual target, Sicily. The body, along with the false documents, was released off the coast of Huelva, Spain, where it was discovered by a local fisherman. The information was passed on to the German authorities, and the deception succeeded in diverting German forces away from the actual invasion site in Sicily. Operation Mincemeat played a crucial role in the success of Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily, in July 1943, and is considered one of the most successful deception operations in military history.
