David Dubal, a longtime member of the Julliard School faculty and author of the “Art of the Piano,” writes of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.2, “In three movements, a colorful, high caliber work which has nevertheless been perpetually in the shadow of No. 1.” In contrast, the music critic of the Orange County Register (CA) Timothy Mangan, in his review of Yuja Wang’s February performance of the work,described the composition as, “Hilariously bombastic and bird brained---Tchaikovsky making sausage, not a concerto—a waste of time to learn.” I agree with Dubal. Mangan, unfortunately, has too many braces on his brains, placed there by too many academics from college, and a certain former music critic with the initials M.B..
