This Monte Cristo sandwich with ham, or turkey, and of course cheese slices is dipped in an egg and milk mixture and fried to a golden brown. A little History about this delightful treat of a Sandwich It is a variation of the French croque-monsieur sandwich that was first served in a café in Paris in the 1910s. The sandwich is said to have exploded onto the American food scene from its humble beginning in California when restaurants in and around Disneyland started serving it to customers of the park. From the 1930s to the 1960s, American cookbooks had recipes for this sandwich under such names as "French sandwich", "toasted ham sandwich", and "French toasted cheese sandwich".
