Interview, Camera & Edit: Bernd Ihno Eilts What you should know about Johannes Weidenmueller: “One of the most interesting and explosive bass players to come along in a long time” is a quote from a review in the French newspaper Le Monde, referring to German bassist Johannes Weidenmueller. Since he moved from the German city Cologne to New York, he has been a member of the Hank Jones Trio, Ray Barretto's New World Spirit, the John Abercrombie Quartet, the Joe Lovano Trio. He collaborated with Brad Mehldau, George Benson, Dr. John, Madeleine Peyroux, John Scofield, Kenny Wheeler, Joshua Redman, Vijay Iyer, Rez Abbasi, Dan Weiss, Ari Hoenig, Christian Artman, John O'Gallagher, Mark Turner, Billy Hart, Donny McCaslin, Ethan Iverson, Jonathan Kreisberg, Chris Kase and Ben Monder, just to mention a few. He is a member of formations such as the Kenny Werner Trio, the Dafnis Pietro Sextet, the John O'Gallagher Trio and the Rez Abbasi group. Johannes Weidenmueller plays the double bass and electric bass, he is a educator, a composer, arranger, a writer and a Trauma Therapist. His bass teachers were giants like Dave Holland, Cecil McBee, Ron Carter and Buster Williams. In 2005 he wrote a book (in two parts) with drummer Ari Hoenig, about metric modulation and describing contracting and expanding time within form. The first volume focus on Polyrhythms, the second part focus on the student's improvisational ability to create and respond to rhythmic musical dialogue. As part of the program “New York Comes To Groningen”, initiated by Dutch bassist Joris Teepe, Johannes Weidenmueller is a traveling teacher at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, The Netherlands, where he teaches twice the year.
