The most recent addition to the band is Steven Malkmus & The Jicks’ drummer Jake Morris who joins for this tour. MOJO described One Eleven Heavy as sounding like, ‘Music From Big Pink or Workingman’s Dead being deconstructed by Royal Trux.’ And, whilst the five-piece is much more than the sum of its influences, they’re nevertheless proud of their musical heritage. As Mitchell Maiato told Aquarium Drunkard: ‘This is the music that’s been inside all of us through osmosis since we were children… I’m not the first British guy to play music influenced by American rock music that was, in turn, influenced by “British Invasion” music that was, itself, influenced by American folk music that was, ultimately, influenced by European and Scandinavian and African folk musics… One Eleven Heavy’s music is part of a rock tradition.’ With the band’s second album Desire Path, out now on Brooklyn label Beyond Beyond is Beyond, the band has dragged that tradition honkey tonking into the 21st Century. Nine brand new songs that recall Funkadelic, Meddle-era Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Santana and The Grateful Dead in equal measure, while simultaneously tackling subject matter firmly rooted in the modern world. And it’s as joyful, uplifting and unexpected as anything you’ll hear in 2019.
