@Gal On Fortress - 12th century BC (BibleWalks.com)
Recently restored and opened to the public, this Iron Age I fortress is located on the southern bank of Guvrin stream, near Kibbutz Gal On. The fortress is dated to the 12th century BC, and was built by the Egyptians in order to control the strategic road along the stream, connecting the plains on the west to the central Judean hills on the east. This became a border area between the Philistines and the Canaanites. After pushed back by the Philistines and Israelites, the fortress was abandoned in ~1150BC. Its plan is 18m square, with 13 inner units and 4 towers on all sides. The walls width are at an average of 1.9m wide. They supported the brick walls of the structure. In the entrance on the east side is a doorstep of a large rectangle slab. In the north east corner room, to the right of the entrance, is a stove where the kitchen and dining place was located. In the inner courtyard are 4 bases of columns which supported the roof. On its right side of the courtyard is a floor paved by field stones, may have been used for keeping the livestock.
