The Phaeton seems like an enigma. Why would Volkswagen, who’s name literally means “people’s car”, make an expensive limousine? Just who was this car aimed at? But there is some method to the madness. Instead of a “people’s car”, think of it more as a “people’s limousine”. The Phaeton was built on a Bentley chassis, it drove like a Bentley and it was just as sumptuous throughout. But it cost a cool £75,000 less at “only” £37,000. That was less than some Audi A6’s!
