@Tesla Employees Point to Increasingly High Production of Flawed Parts
A number of former and current employees from Tesla have alleged the company is churning out an increasing number of parts with flaws leading to an unnecessary reworking of the components at its factory in Fremont, California. The result has been a shares drop of 4.45 percent after a media report on the same for the Model 3 production line according to an engineer who preferred to remain anonymous, up to 40 percent of the parts being made or received at the Fremont factory are in need of reworking. The need for the reviews of the components coming from the line is one of the contributing factors to the delays associated with the Model 3. Tesla Denies Allegations Tesla has since categorically denied the report claiming their remanufacturing team is not in the business of reworking cars, meaning there were no flaws with the parts to speak of. The Model 3 which is modestly priced is one of the cheapest vehicles at this time and has been key to the future of the firm as an automaker for the masses. The company did admit it had paused the production of the Model 3 line-up at the Fremont plant allegedly to make some adjustments to the manufacturing process. The company issued a statement claiming the production plan of the Model 3 includes periods of scheduled down time within the Gigafactory 1 and the Fremont factory. These scheduled downtime periods were apparently to improve on automation and reduce bottlenecks so as to have efficient production rates. Compelling Evidence Now Tesla’s future as a mainstream automaker is dependent on efficient and automated production particularly of the Model 3 which has orders numbering more than 400,000 at the present. The CEO, Elon Musk stated in July last year that the car marker would probably be issuing 20,000 units to the market every month by December 2017. Tesla later pushed the dates and downgraded the expectations almost 90 percent saying they would be making 2,500 every week by the end of the month and 5000 units per month by the end of June 2018. The fact that Tesla has been pushing the dates on the production targets is a red flag and has had an ultimately demoralizing effect on the employees. The employees claiming there has been an increase in the number of flawed parts being churned out have also claimed the company brought in teams of technicians and engineers from its service centers. These were there to assist in the repair and reworking on site from the Fremont plant. There is no denying there are issues to be dealt with, though no matter how much Tesla tries to sugar-coat it. Matt Girvan, a manufacturing specialist and founder of MAG Consulting stated that even during what would be known as launch mode if Tesla is selling its vehicles to customers then it should not be considering of experiencing a large amount of reworking on the components as this alludes to something which is wrong with the production process. That would mean there is an internal quality issue which is of a magnitude that
