Blackthorn's video: Cockatiel Flock and their Human

Meet my cockatiel flock! Well, ok, maybe 1/3 of them. :) In this video I will first use the tame and curious birds to wake up the curiosity of the rest of the flock to get them to come to me. More about the topic: I often hear that a flock of cockatiels "can not be tamed". Or that a cockatiel who is adult and wild and flighted can not be tamed. Well, that is not true. :) It just means you need a lot of patience. And some millet. ;) I'm a fan of positive reinforcement. Shortly it means that the good or wanted behavior is rewarded to reinforce it. But it is much more: the ideology also includes that the birds are not scared or forced. Or actively (=in training terms, "positively") punished. Forcing is pretty much a human making the bird to do something it doesn't want to do by it's own choice. Or that you make the bird feel so uncomfortable that it has to do something. (Like pushing the chest so that eventually the bird will step on to your finger - instead that the bird would take the step itself.) And this is one of the key things in cockatiel flock training. The flock mirrors its members and their behavior. If you scare some of them, the rest will be more cautious, too. Don't go and just bring them to you or force them tocome to you: Make yourself so interesting that THEY _WANT_ TO COME TO YOU! Use their curiosity! Use your tame birds to come to you first - and the less tame birds will follow. Use the parents to transfer the behavior to their chicks. And the more you do this, the more it reinforces the behavior. And ta-daa, you have a flock that you can share this kind of moments, becoming a happy bird tree. ;D And, after you've gained their trust, you can start taking things even further and teach them more and more.
