Professor and former journalist Jayanthi from Tamil Nadu lost a substantial chunk of her life savings as a result of falling for a clever online scam. During a video call, the con artists pretended to be police officials and accused her of money laundering. They then utilized intimidation to extract a large amount of money. Jayanthi was placed under digital arrest by the criminals, who also showed her Aadhaar card and said her bank account had been used for illegal operations. This prevented her from moving around or communicating. They threatened to arrest her over the course of three days unless she transferred ₹ 10 lakh to an account they said was owned by the RBI.
